How Can I Come to Know God?

Coming to know God and his love—knowledge and love that uplift and save—only comes through individual revelation from the Holy Ghost. We cannot discover God in a laboratory.

Because we are the literal children of God, we have a relationship with him that is different from all his creations. As children of God, we can approach him in sincere, worshipful prayer and have the confidence that God will hear and answer. And he will hear and answer…every time!

Coming to know God through sincere seeking

In the scriptures we learn that God reveals himself individually to those who are diligently seek to know him and obey his truths. Prayer coupled with studying the scriptures provide us an avenue for coming to know God and learning to hear his voice. Studying the Book of Mormon is a powerful way to know God. The Prophet Joseph Smith said,

“The Book of Mormon is the most correct of any book on earth…and a man would get nearer to God by abiding its precepts than by any other book.” 1

A modern apostle, Elder Bruce R. McConkie, said,

“Man’s purpose in life is to learn the nature and kind of being that God is, and then by conforming to his laws and ordinances, to progress to that high state of exaltation wherein man becomes perfect as the Father is perfect.” 2

To know God is life's greatest quest

No quest in life is more important than seeking to know God and his son, Jesus Christ. We find them through sincere prayer, through studying the scriptures, particularly The Book of Mormon, through studying the words of the living prophets, and by living God’s commandments. Day by day we come to know God better.
