The Gospel of Jesus Christ

The word gospel literally means good tidings or good news. 1

The gospel of Jesus Christ is 'good news'

The good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ is God’s plan for the salvation of his children. The gospel of Jesus Christ encompasses man’s eternal journey—

  • from the moment of his spiritual birth
  • to his entering this life and receiving a physical body
  • to his dying and preparing for resurrection in the Spirit World
  • to his resurrection from the dead
  • to his final judgement
  • to his receiving an eternal inheritance in a kingdom of glory.

The central element of the gospel of Jesus Christ is the Atonement

The focal point and most important part of the gospel is the atonement of Jesus Christ. In addition to availing us grace, or divine enabling power, to aid us through the trials of this life, the Atonement provides us these two immeasurably valuable and eternal blessings:

  • The Atonement saves us from physical death by means of the resurrection.
  • The Atonement redeems us from spiritual death by paying the price of the consequences of our sins.

The gospel of Jesus Christ is the sum of truth and salvation knowledge

The gospel of Jesus Christ contains all the eternal truths, laws, and ordinances that are “necessary for you…to enable [us] to walk back to the presence of the Father,” 2 and to live with him and our families forever.

The first principles and ordinances of the gospel of Jesus Christ are:

  1. Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ
  2. Repentance
  3. Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins
  4. Receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on on hands. 3

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, this is my gospel….” 4 In other words, these first principles and ordinances are the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ section consists of:

  1. The Savior Cleanses Us from Sin
  2. Faith in Jesus Christ
  3. The Doctrine of Repentance
  4. Baptism, Our First Covenant
  5. The Gift of the Holy Ghost
  6. Enduring to the End
