What Is Church Like?

Church is a refuge from the chaos of everyday life; a time to focus on worshipping God and loving our neighbors.

Sunday services

Every Sunday, we gather together to sing hymns, hear sermons, and teach each other about the Savior. Church is a spiritual recharge and a perfect way to keep Jesus front and center in our lives. We welcome all visitors to attend our Christian services and worship with us.

Church service times vary from congregation to congregation. However, you can always count on one main meeting for everyone followed by a separate class split by age groups or general interests.

Sacrament meeting

The service for everyone is called sacrament meeting. This meeting consists of songs, prayers, and sermons (or “talks”) given by different members of the congregation every week. But the most important part of the meeting is when we take the sacrament (or Communion).

The sacrament reminds us of Jesus

Each week, bread and water are blessed and offered to the congregation. As we eat and drink these symbolic elements, we promise to remember Jesus Christ and His sacrifice and to keep His commandments. It’s a wonderful opportunity to feel God’s love for us and invite the Holy Spirit to guide and comfort us.

Music and hymns

Singing about the Savior and our many blessings helps us feel closer to God. A typical sacrament meeting will include three or four hymns sung by the entire congregation. There might also be additional musical numbers by a choir or a small group. You may recognize some of the hymns in the songbook, such as “Nearer My God, to Thee” or “How Great Thou Art,” but you’ll learn some fun new ones too. And it’s totally okay if you sing off-key! Raise your voice anyway as you worship with us.

Sharing testimonies

On the first Sunday of every month, there aren’t typical sermons. Instead, any member of the Church who would like to can go up to the pulpit and share their testimony of Jesus Christ and His gospel. This is an opportunity for members to share their own convictions and beliefs with each other. As we listen to others’ testimonies, we can feel God’s Spirit fill our hearts and our own convictions and beliefs in God can be strengthened.

Other Sunday meetings

Either before or after sacrament meeting, there are a variety of other age-specific classes for children and adults. If you’d like to attend these additional meetings, ask someone at church and they’ll be happy to help you find the right classroom.
