3 Christian Teachings That Comfort When a Loved One Dies

By Comeuntochrist.org
“Family ties can continue beyond the grave.” Perry quote

Death Is Not the End

President Thomas S. Monson reminds us, “We laugh, we cry, we work, we play, we love, we live. And then we die. Death is our universal heritage. All must pass its portals.” But the scriptures promise, “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive” (1 Corinthians 15:22).

Losing a loved one to death can be one of the most difficult challenges we face in life. But the gospel of Jesus Christ can lift us during this trying time. Here are three teachings that offer comfort when a loved one dies.

Jesus Christ Bears Our Burdens

Jesus Christ “descended below all things” (Doctrine & Covenants 88:6) so that He could comprehend our heartache and pain and offer comfort in all circumstances. While He has power to preserve or restore life as He did for the son of the widow of Nain, He more often lifts and comforts us in our loss when someone dies. Consider His interaction with Mary and Martha at the death of their brother Lazarus. Though Lazarus would soon be raised from the dead, “Jesus wept” with the sisters in an act of loving compassion for their heartache (John 11:35).

When a loved one dies, we can turn to the Savior for love and compassion. Watch as these families share their experience of finding comfort through Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ Overcame Death

Jesus Christ “swallow[ed] up death in victory” (Isaiah 25:8) through His Atonement and Resurrection, making it possible for us to live forever. Though the separation from loved ones is real and painful at present, we can trust the Savior’s promise of eternal life because He lives.

In this video, individuals share what they know about life after death.

Family Relationships Can Last Forever

One of the greatest promises of the gospel of Jesus Christ is that not only will we live forever, but we can be with our loved ones eternally if we follow Jesus Christ. While death may separate us temporarily, because of Jesus Christ, those family relationships can continue.

Watch as one family trusts the promise that family is forever as they experience a temporary separation from loved ones through death.
