5 Tips to Encourage a Healthy Marriage

By Comeuntochrist.org

Nurturing Marriage

Marriage is a living thing—and just like any living thing, it needs nourishment. So, what do you feed a marriage to keep it healthy? Here are five ways to help your marriage not just survive—but thrive.

1. Communicate

The wedding day is the creation of a team. Like any team, communication is a necessary ingredient for success. When the marriage team is committed to having a great marriage, both parties communicate regularly about the game of life and how they’re going to navigate it together. Good communication strengthens husband and wife—the marriage—and eventually the family.

Many couples have the opportunity to add children to their team. Positive, consistent, healthy communication between spouses increases feelings of security and predictability for children. Through the example of parents who consistently speak openly and honestly with one another, children learn to perpetuate this most important skill themselves.

2. Respect

Respect is a gift you give your partner. Spouses who feel respected are more willing to open up and share their feelings, struggles, dreams, and beliefs. Respect allows them to feel comfortable and safe in the relationship. Being a good listener and being slow to judge are some of the best ways to respect your partner.

3. Serve

When you look for ways to serve your spouse, you’re actually discovering new ways to say “I love you.” The ways to serve are as vast and unique as people are. Your spouse is a one-of-a-kind individual with their very own likes and dislikes. By simple observation, you can quickly discover how to enrich their life in ways that will be meaningful to them.

Another way to serve your marriage is by seeking common interests. Look for things to share. Is there a food you both enjoy? A place you both like to visit? A hobby? A sport? Seek your commonalities and use them to enhance your relationship.

4. Forgive

Make room for the imperfections that come with being human. If your spouse forgets to take out the trash or fold the laundry, offer them the forgiveness you hope they’d extend to you in a similar situation. Forgiveness is an essential part of marriages that thrive.

5. Touch

The physical freedom entitled to spouses allows them to gather information about each other that is less apparent to others. A spouse may tune in to all kinds of emotions coming from their partner through this important form of communication, thus increasing a feeling of closeness and intimacy. Touch is fundamental to human communication, bonding, and health. So take time to hold hands—and one another.
