Activities to Help Kids Remember the Meaning of Easter

The True Meaning of Easter

Former Church President Gordon B. Hinckley declared, “Easter morning is the Lord’s day, when we celebrate the greatest victory of all time, the victory over death.” At the end of His earthly ministry, following the terrible price paid in the Garden of Gethsemane and on the cross of Calvary, Jesus Christ emerged triumphant from the Garden Tomb as “the firstfruits of them that slept” (1 Corinthians 15:20).

To keep Jesus Christ at the center of your Easter celebration this year, consider these activities to help kids remember the meaning of Easter.

Before Easter Arrives

There are many activities available for children to set the right tone for Easter Sunday. Consider some of these ideas for the days leading up to Easter.

  • Do a 30-day countdown to Easter, celebrating the life, teachings, and mission of Jesus Christ. There is a great one available here
  • Starting eight days before Easter, read scriptures and discuss events that occurred with the pictures in this activity
  • Hold a Christ-centered Easter egg hunt. Fill and hide 12 numbered plastic eggs with items representing events from the Savior’s last week. Let kids hunt for the eggs, open them in numerical order, and discuss the events together. (Here is a good example of how this activity could work.)

Keep Sunday Sacred

Children enjoy going on Easter egg hunts, coloring eggs, and finding Easter baskets filled with treats. But these activities are not the essence of Easter. Consider holding these secular activities on Saturday so Easter Sunday can be centered on Jesus Christ.

Here are some suggested activities to keep Easter Sunday sacred.

  • Hold a sunrise service and share thoughts and feelings about Jesus Christ. Depending on the weather where you live, this service could be held outdoors so you can witness the dawning of Easter morning.
  • Watch videos of Jesus Christ, His life, and His impact on mankind. Bible Videos depict many moments in His life, including those leading up to and including His Resurrection. Also consider watching “His Sacred Name: An Easter Declaration,” “None Were with Him,” and “Sunday Will Come.” Watch the following video and discuss with kids the blessings they recognize because of Jesus Christ.
