Are There Prophets Today?

Modern-day prophets play an integral role in communicating the will of God to His children on the earth. One unique Mormon belief is that God has called modern-day prophets and continues to speak through them.

“For behold, I am God; and I am a God of miracles; and I will show unto the world that I am the same yesterday, today, and forever” (2 Nephi 27:23).

If God has said that He is the same as He was in the times of ancient prophets like Noah and Moses, if He has said that He is the same today and forever, then doesn’t it make sense that God would speak to the world today?

Like the Church in Christ’s Time

Prophets have always led Christ’s Church. Noah, Moses, and Isaiah are all examples of prophets who lived during different eras and who were responsible for leading Christ’s followers through trying times.

When Jesus came to the earth, He organized His Church to spread the gospel and to bring saving ordinances like baptism to the entire world. Jesus appointed Apostles and gave the priesthood to righteous men.

The priesthood is the literal power and authority of God. Righteous men have the authority to use that power to heal the sick, give blessings of comfort, and administer the Church.

You may be wondering, what does the priesthood and Church organization have to do with modern-day prophets? That’s a great question.

The Church after Christ’s Death

After Christ’s Crucifixion and Resurrection, the Apostle Peter became the leader of the Church. And like many other Apostles, Peter was martyred. As these Apostles who had walked and talked with Christ were killed, the Church lost many of its foundational principles, teachings, and most important, a clear line of priesthood authority.

Eventually, members of Christ’s Church were scattered across the world and retained only fragments of the full truth that Jesus had taught while He was on the earth. Soon the organization of the Church and the priesthood become lost to the world.

The Restoration of Christ’s Church

Today we have modern prophets, thanks to the Restoration of Christ’s original Church.

Under the direction of Heavenly Messengers and by the power of God, Joseph Smith restored the organizational structure and priesthood power of Christ’s original Church. The Church that Joseph organized in the 1830s is the same one that exists today—and it has always been led by a living prophet.

Prophets are an essential part of the Church that Jesus established. President Thomas S. Monson, the current prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, frequently counsels the world on issues such as family relationships and how to gain a greater spiritual understanding of the truth of Christ’s gospel.

As in times of old, God has provided a way for His children here on earth to hear His words and listen to His counsel. Modern-day prophets speak with the power and authority of God. They teach people to help guide them back to Heavenly Father’s presence after this life.
