Bible Verses about Love

Love is among the most prominent themes in the Bible; scripture verses on love abound. But the Bible verses about love are more than just comforting or inspiring quotes. They are instructions that can help focus your behavior, direct your actions toward others, and answer your questions about how to improve your relationships with family members, with friends and colleagues, and with God.

Bible verses about the qualities of love

The word love can connote different things such as affection, fondness, or passion. However, God speaks of love as “charity”—love for another that is selfless, kind, and untiring. Charity is one of the highest forms of love, and God commands that we have charity toward all.

  • “Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity . . . beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth” (1 Corinthians 13:4, 7–8).
  • “Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another” (Romans 12:10).
  • “Let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love” (1 John 4:7–8).
  • “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear” (1 John 4:18).
  • “A friend loveth at all times” (Proverbs 17:17).
  • “See that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently” (1 Peter 1:22).
  • “Let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth” (1 John 3:18).

Bible verses about loving all people

God’s view of love is unfailing and all-inclusive. God loves every person on earth. He expects you to do the same—even when it’s challenging.

  • “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” (Mark 12:30–31).
  • “For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye?” (Matthew 5:46).
  • “But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great” (Luke 6:35).
  • The stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself” (Leviticus 19:34).
  • “Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” (Leviticus 19:18).
  • “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:34–35).

Bible verses about loving your family

Your family is essential to God’s plan, so He feels the relationships within it are very important. Here are just a few of the Bible verses that teach about loving your family.

  • “Husbands, love your wives” (Ephesians 5:25).
  • “Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband” (Ephesians 5:33).
  • “Teach the young women . . . to love their husbands, to love their children” (Titus 2:4).
  • “Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life” (Ecclesiastes 9:9).
  • “Honour thy father and thy mother” (Exodus 20:12).
  • “Children, obey your parents in all things” (Colossians 3:20).
  • “Be comforted, being knit together in love” (Colossians 2:2).

Bible verses about God’s love for you

God is your Heavenly Father, and He loves you. The scriptures confirm that He watches over each of His children. He cares deeply about your decisions and direction in life.

  • “Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows” (Luke 12:6–7).
  • “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
  • “For [God] maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust” (Matthew 5:45).

Showing love to God

While God wants you to love those around you and treat all people with care, do not forget to also show love and reverence to Him who has given you all.

  • “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.” (Matthew 22:37–38).
  • “What doth the Lord thy God require of thee, but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul” (Deuteronomy 10:12).
  • “I will love thee, O Lord, my strength” (Psalm 18:1).
  • “I love the Lord, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications. Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live” (Psalm 116:1–2).
  • “If ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15).
