How You Can Make a Fresh Start—3 Ways Jesus's Teachings Can Help

As we begin another year, it’s a great time to evaluate where our lives are headed. Do you want to make a change? Do you want to make a fresh start? Christ’s teachings give us some great ideas about how to do this.

1. Spend time helping a friend.

Life can be pretty stressful at times, and it’s very easy for us to get wrapped up in our own problems. The more we do this, the more overwhelming things can become. Christ taught, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). As we focus on the needs of someone else, we often discover greater clarity about what matters most in our lives, and we are able to make the hard changes that will bring us greater happiness. Our problems no longer seem so big when we see them from someone else’s perspective. Try doing something kind for someone close to you. Not only will you feel good about the act itself, but their gratitude for what you did will also lift you up. Small acts of kindness always lead to personal happiness.

2. Remember that it is never too late.

In Matthew 20, Jesus shares a parable about vineyard workers. Throughout the day the owner of the vineyard continues to hire additional people. At the end of the day all of the laborers are paid the same amount, even those who arrived at the very end of the day. Here Jesus teaches that it's not so much about where we are on the path or when we arrived, but rather which direction we are headed. When we are trying to make a fresh start, we need to remember that it’s never too late to try again.

3. Come and see.

Toward the beginning of his ministry, Jesus Christ was approached by two of His followers. Intrigued by what they had heard about Him from others, they asked Jesus, “Where dwellest thou?” He responded with the simple yet profound phrase, “Come and see” (John 1:38–39). This same invitation is open to all of us. Christ promises us peace of mind and spirit if we only walk where He walked and serve as He served. There is no better way to know if Christ’s teachings actually lead to a happier life than to try it. Come and see.
