Finding Your Moral Courage

We have all, at times, staggered under the weight of difficult moral dilemmas. Sometimes, determining the right course of action poses the greatest challenge. At other times, carrying the right thing through becomes the stumbling block. Thankfully, we have not been left alone when seeking moral courage for the tough moments. Jesus Christ is the light to whom we can look for help and strength when facing moral challenges (see Look to the Light). Said He, “I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness” (John 12:46). His light, the Light of Christ, influences us for good as we look to Him for courage to act according to the “dictates of our own conscience” (Articles of Faith 1:11).

Our moral courage, that driving force that helps us recognize and act on the influences of the Light of Christ, does not often lead us down the easy path. Often, the choices we make require significant support to divert us from the path of least resistance. However, with the Savior’s light, we can find our moral courage with the help of a few simple tools.

Having Hope in Our Heavenly Heritage

We are all literal children of a loving and very personal Heavenly Father (see Child of God), truly a heavenly heritage. That knowledge opens our view to our own potential strength. Armed with that knowledge, we gain confidence in our divine capabilities to stand strong in the face of difficult uncertainties and find our moral courage.

Petitioning God in Prayer

God hears and answers prayers. When we are troubled and outside influences threaten to undermine our resolve, heavenly help is as near as our humble prayers (see Origin). As we petition God sincerely, He will reveal and strengthen our moral courage to face our challenges.

Seeking Strength in the Scriptures

When we feel alone in our struggles, we can turn to the scriptures for strength. Through the examples of others, we can find the courage to be strong. Joshua, when given the charge to lead the children of Israel into the promised land, undoubtedly experienced a moment or two of feeble knees and faint heart. But the Lord reminded him repeatedly, “Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest” (Joshua 1:9). Esther exercised great moral courage in approaching the king for the deliverance of her people (see Courage). And Paul gives continued hope as he reminds us of the many who have gone before, exercising faith through great trials to do the right thing (see Hebrews 11).

As we remember our status as children of God, seek strength through prayer, and look to examples in the scriptures, we can, through the Light of Christ, find our own moral courage and conquer the challenges before us.
