Four Blessings That Come from Praying as a Family

A Praying Family

In an address titled “The Blessings of Family Prayer,” previous President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gordon B. Hinckley said: “The family is the basic unit of society. The praying family is the hope of a better society.” Many blessings come from family prayer. Here are four reasons to give it a try.

Family Prayer Provides Protection

We will never be completely shielded from life’s hardships—which is actually a good thing. Resistance and challenges are the very things that strengthen us. However, when we pray as families, we can receive divine protection from experiences that might harm us, including succumbing to temptation. We can also receive inspired guidance that can help us live in a way our Heavenly Father hopes we will.

In the following video, President James E. Faust tells a story of a family that was blessed by their fervent prayer during the Second World War.

Family Prayer Develops Love, Respect, Gratitude, and Humility

Just like light and darkness cannot occupy the same space at the same time, neither can love and hate. When we pray to our Heavenly Father, we invite His loving spirit into our home, our lives, and our relationships. Regular family prayer can help crowd out hate, disrespect, selfishness, and pride and replace it with love, respect, gratitude, and humility. Though it may feel awkward if you’re just getting started, if you persist, you’ll see Heavenly Father begin to work small but meaningful miracles in your family.

Family Prayer Strengthens Our Relationship with God

There is a faith cycle spoken of by Elder David A. Bednar that consists of taking action, seeing evidence, and feeling assurance. When this faith cycle is applied to family prayer, our relationship with our Heavenly Father gets stronger. By taking action as a family to pray, we can begin to see evidence that our Heavenly Father is present and working in our lives. This evidence allows us to feel assurance that we’re not alone and can give us courage to push forward through hardship. Assurance increases our trust in Heavenly Father and helps us act again on our faith in Him. Applying the faith cycle to family prayer can be a powerful experience that deepens our love and appreciation of our Heavenly Father.

Family Prayer Can Strengthen Society

President Hinckley also said, “Family prayer is one of the best medicines that would stop the dread disease that is eroding the character of our society.” He extended a challenge and a promise that is applicable to all families: “If you sincerely apply family prayer, you will not go unrewarded. The changes may not be readily apparent. They may be extremely subtle. But they are real, for God ‘is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him’ (Hebrews 11:6).”
