How Does the Holy Spirit Help You?

The Holy Spirit Comforts

Throughout the Bible and the Book of Mormon, you’ll see references to the Holy Spirit, the Holy Ghost, or the Spirit of God. One of the best-known references to the Holy Spirit is found in the Gospel of John: “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you” (John 14:16–17).

Jesus said these words to His Apostles before His Crucifixion. He wanted to make sure they knew that even after His death, He wouldn’t leave them to fend for themselves. Jesus promised to send a Comforter, which is one of the roles of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit Reveals

Mormons believe that the Holy Ghost is the third member of the Godhead, a being separate from both Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. It is through the Holy Ghost that Heavenly Father and Jesus communicate with people. Sometimes this communication comes in the form of revelation. Do you remember the story of Simeon in the Gospel of Luke? It is found in chapter 2, and since it follows the story of Christ’s birth, it is often read aloud at Christmastime: “And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout. . . . And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ” (Luke 2:25–26).

As the rest of the story goes, when Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem to perform some of the practices required by law, Simeon saw the baby and knew instantly that it was the Savior.

Simeon’s story is just one of hundreds in the Bible and Book of Mormon that describe how the Holy Ghost revealed certain events to different people

The Holy Spirit Helps You

The best part is this—the Holy Ghost still acts as a revelator for God and Jesus Christ today. You can receive direct guidance from God through the Holy Ghost to help you in any and all aspects of your life. In addition to guiding you, the Holy Ghost also acts as a Comforter. How often have you been going through difficult times and just wanted to know that things would turn out? Perhaps you yearned to feel a sense of peace through those trying times. The Holy Ghost can help you feel comfort when you need it most. As recorded in the Doctrine and Covenants, “You shall receive my Spirit, the Holy Ghost, even the Comforter, which shall teach you the peaceable things of the kingdom” (D&C 36:2).

The key phrase from that verse is “the peaceable things of the kingdom.” That phrase refers to the gospel of Jesus Christ. One fundamental Christian teaching is that you have to experience trials in your life to prove your faith in God. You’re also taught that as long as you have faith and you strive to be a sincere follower of Christ, things will work out in the end.

The Holy Ghost teaches you those lessons and helps you remember them in the darkest of times. Even when it seems that there’s no light at the end of the tunnel, the Holy Spirit can remind you that through your faith in Christ, you can be saved and experience a greater life after this one.
