How to Have a More Uplifting Experience on Social Media

Though social media is a great way to connect with friends and loved ones, it can also be disheartening. Negative news, sad stories, and opinionated rants can seem to stretch on forever. And even good news can be overwhelming when we don’t feel particularly good about ourselves or our own lives.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. Here are a few things you can do now to have a more uplifting social media experience.

1. Start with you.

If you want to have a good social media experience, an obvious place to start is on your own page and with your own posts and comments. Are you creating the kind of experience for others that you’d like to have for yourself?

Post things that inspire and uplift. Avoid commenting on posts that upset or anger you. If you can’t say something nice, it’s best not to say anything at all.

2. Look for the good.

Then, take some time to review the pages and platforms you currently follow. Unfollow pages that discourage or depress you, and stay away from topics that make you angry. If scrolling the comments section on a friend’s opinionated post upsets you, don’t do it!

Next, seek out uplifting content. Like or follow pages that inspire and energize you. You’ll find that a few clicks can dramatically change the look and feel of your newsfeed.

3. Scroll less. Connect more.

How you use social media matters. Scrolling through an endless stream of everyone else’s engagements, promotions, and vacations can be discouraging.
Instead, try to connect in meaningful ways with friends and family online. Brighten someone’s day by sending them a funny video, or reconnect with an old friend by sending them a personal message.

As you consider your current social media experience and look for more ways to get uplifted, remember Paul’s admonition to the Philippians:

“Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things” (Philippians 4:8).

Social media can be a wonderful experience or a dreadful one. It all depends on what you’re looking for. What you focus on grows.
