The Life of Jesus Christ—from Birth to Resurrection

From humble birth to glorious Resurrection—Jesus Christ was, and is, a miracle.

A Humble Birth

Before Joseph and Mary were married, the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, announcing she would become the mother of the Son of God. A Roman decree required that Mary and Joseph travel to Bethlehem. On the night Jesus was born, an angel appeared to shepherds, proclaiming, “Fear not: … for unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.”

Providing an Example and Performing Miracles

Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist when He was approximately 30 years old. The Holy Spirit descended upon Him, and Heavenly Father spoke, saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

Jesus preached and healed throughout Galilee and Judea. He healed the sick, cleansed lepers, restored sight to the blind, and cast out devils. He spoke in parables, stilled stormy seas, fed thousands, and walked on water. He raised from the dead a widow’s son, the young daughter of Jairus, and his friend Lazarus.

Atonement and Crucifixion

To shouts of hosanna, Jesus descended the Mount of Olives on a donkey’s back to Jerusalem. He taught there for several days while the chief priests plotted against him. He ate the Passover with His Apostles in an upper room in Jerusalem, instituted the Lord’s Supper, and gave His last teachings.

He and His disciples then entered a garden called Gethsemane. There, Christ bled from every pore and began to suffer for the sins of all mankind. While His disciples slept, Jesus performed this greatest single act in human history: the infinite Atonement.

In Gethsemane, Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss. This betrayal brought Jesus before an illegal tribunal. He was falsely accused and condemned to death because He claimed to be the Son of God. The procurator Pilate yielded to the crowd’s plea to crucify Him. Jesus was whipped, mocked, and crowned with thorns. On Golgotha’s hill, He was nailed to a cross and there hung between two thieves. Taunted and jeered by passersby, He finally said, “It is finished,” and died.

He was buried in a borrowed tomb.

Glorious Resurrection

Three days later, angels rolled away the stone from the tomb and spoke to Mary Magdalene and other woman: “Why seek ye the living among the dead?” Jesus appeared to Mary and later that evening ministered to the Apostles. For 40 days, He instructed His disciples and commissioned them to baptize all nations. Finally, He ascended into heaven.
