Be Strong and of a Good Courage

After the children of Israel had wandered in the wilderness for 40 years, Joshua, the newly called prophet, was charged with the daunting task of leading them into the promised land. This challenge included claiming the land from the current inhabitants, fighting battles, and providing spiritual leadership for millions. Understandably, Joshua may have felt the overwhelming weight of the task before him. And so the Lord offered these comforting yet encouraging words:

“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest” (Joshua 1:9). We, like Joshua, may be asked to face overwhelming challenges in our lives. But as the scripture teaches, when we are strong and courageous and overcome fear, the Lord will be with us always.

What Does It Mean to Be Strong?

Part of being strong and courageous means trusting in the Lord as the true source of strength. Joshua didn’t have all the answers for the challenges before him. But he was counseled to go forward anyway, acting in faith, because the Lord would be with him. Like Joshua, we seldom have all the answers to our personal challenges. But there is comfort in knowing that when we turn to the Lord for guidance, we will succeed because He has the answers we need. He was with Joshua, and He will be with us.

How Can We Be Strong and Courageous?

Being strong and courageous seldom requires grand gestures. More often, it requires the integrity to make small decisions every day that turn our hearts to the Savior. Each day, as we prayerfully seek His direction, study His word, and follow His example, we will have the courage to let go of fear and face our trials with courage and faith. Watch as these three women exhibit great courage through simple acts of faith in the face of great challenges.
