Look Forward with Faith

By Comeuntochrist.org

The old year has ended, and a new year stretches out before us. How are you feeling about this past year? What did you do? What did you not do? Are you looking forward to the future with hope? Do you look back at the past with regret?

Reflecting on the past is a good thing—even necessary for us to gain important understanding from our life experiences. However, there is a type of looking back that can drag us down instead of helping us move forward. For example, in the Old Testament, a man named Lot was told by messengers from God to take his family and flee from Sodom and Gomorrah, cities God was going to destroy because of their wickedness. The final words of warning? “Look not behind thee.” In this video, New Yorkers talk about what significance that story has for us in our lives today.

The problem with Lot’s wife was probably not so much the act of looking back, but more that in her heart she wanted to be back in Sodom and Gomorrah. How often in our lives have we been moving forward toward something good, only to become afraid and “look back” in our hearts to where we were before? James E. Faust, a former member of the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints once said, “Let us not take counsel from our fears. May we remember always to be of good cheer, put our faith in God, and live worthy for Him to direct us. We are each entitled to receive personal inspiration to guide us through our mortal probation.” As we look at our lives and plan for the new year, we can make our decisions out of faith, not fear, knowing that God will support us in our decisions to do good, to take care of our bodies and spirits, and to better serve Him.

The wonderful thing is, we don’t have to wait for a new year to come around to change, and we don’t have to be discouraged if we mess up a few times. Every day we can choose to begin again, to get up, to keep going, to turn our lives around, to move forward with faith. Because of Jesus Christ, every day can be the beginning of a new year.
