Mountains to Climb: Facing Life’s Challenges

By Comeuntochrist.org

Life is hard. There are times when challenges seem like a mountain, tall and steep, stretching up in front of us. The obstacles seem insurmountable, with no end in sight and no relief coming our way.

In times of trouble, what makes all the difference is our faith in Jesus Christ. Through His suffering, death, and Resurrection, He overcame all things, and because He did, we can too. Because He suffered through our sufferings, He walks through our trials with us. His strength becomes ours.

Build Your Foundation

How do we develop the faith we need to withstand life’s challenges?

President Henry B. Eyring, Second Counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said, “The ground must be carefully prepared for our foundation of faith to withstand the storms that will come into every life. The solid basis for a foundation of faith is personal integrity. Our choosing the right consistently whenever the choice is placed before us creates the solid ground under our faith.” As we pray, read God’s word, go to church, and keep God’s commandments with a sincere heart, our faith becomes stronger day by day, and we develop the spiritual endurance we need to face our trials.

Protect Your Faith

But what if your trials are already overwhelming, and you feel that your faith is weak?

As President Eyring says in this video, “Acting on even a twig of faith allows God to grow it.”

Protect your faith. Sometimes faith is less a feeling than it is a choice—a choice to keep going, to keep praying, to keep hoping and serving even when we do not feel particularly full of faith. As we move forward, God will show His hand in our lives, and we will feel His strength and comfort through others and His Spirit. Those glimpses of light and moments of peace will be anchors to hold onto in our times of trouble.

The Savior Is with Us

Jesus Christ will never abandon us. Thomas S. Monson, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said, “You will one day stand aside and look at your difficult times, and you will realize that He was always there beside you.” The Savior Himself promises, “I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee” (Joshua 1:5). His promises are sure, and even in the midst of our challenges we can be happy now, knowing that He lives, that He loves us, and that through Him we will overcome all things.
