Overlooked Teaching Opportunities during Christmas Season

A tradition is a custom or belief passed on from one generation to the next. Traditions can shape our family and our holiday experiences. Childhood is filled with fond memories of these traditions. Whether it’s putting up the tree together at Christmastime, going to holiday parties, or sharing favorite family recipes, it’s our traditions that shape our holiday experiences.

Christmas is filled with traditions; gift giving, caroling, service, lights, and shopping are a few. During the busy holiday season, it’s often easy to get caught up in these activities. We often don’t take time to think about where these traditions even came from. These experiences can become opportunities to teach children about the real meaning of Christmas and moments for us to reflect on the season. All around us are opportunities to share the message of what this holiday is really all about—our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Gift giving is symbolic of the three Wise Men who visited the Christ child and presented Him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The Christmas star represents the star of Bethlehem, which led these Wise Men to Christ. Family parties and the gathering of friends are reminders of the importance of our relationships. And the many service opportunities stem from our love of the Savior and how we can share His love with those around us.

The following video shares the story of how a small child took an opportunity to help teach her own family about the true meaning of Christmas.

As you’re passing through this holiday season, take time to stop and ponder how you can turn your holiday traditions, activities, or service into teaching opportunities to teach your children about Christ. You may even find the children around you teaching you something about the Savior.
