Obtaining Peace of Mind Through a Connection With God

How can you obtain peace of mind through a connection with God?

All you have to do is look at the headlines in the news. More often than not, they are filled with words like “death,” destruction, “turmoil,” and “conspiracy.”

It is true that we live in a world filled with many unsettling conditions. Despite these concerns that seem to plague the world and the personal challenges that we all seem to encounter, peace can be a reality. We can indeed be calm, serene, and tranquil in spite of the turmoil that surrounds us.

In the Holy Bible, Jesus Christ Himself extended an invitation to us all: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30).

Others have also provided suggestions on how to find peace through connecting with God, our loving Heavenly Father. In his address entitled “Living a Life of Peace, Joy, and Purpose,” Richard G. Scott provided some notable suggestions to help us achieve peace of mind through connecting with God and others. Some of his suggestions are below:

1. Establish a set of principles that will guide every aspect of your life—in your home, in service, in your profession, and in your community.

Do not compartmentalize your life and set different standards for different aspects of your life. Be the same person no matter where you are and what you are doing.

2. Don’t make exceptions to your standards.

Never compromise your standards.

3. Be loyal.

Be loyal to your parents and your loved ones. Above all, be loyal to Jesus Christ, the Savior. Success comes when your actions are consistent with the teachings of the Lord.

4. Live in such a way that Jesus Christ can guide you to where He wants you to be and to serve.

He can do that if you live His commandments worthily and strive in every way to be obedient to His teachings.

5. Serve others.

Sharing what you know about Jesus Christ with others will bring you happiness and bless their lives.

6. Smile.

Life is not all that bad. You will soon learn that everybody has problems and nobody wants to hear about yours. Put those things aside and smile.

7. Don’t complain.

Life isn’t always fair. That’s a fact. But it’s always charged with marvelous opportunities if you know how to find them.

8. Use the Savior Jesus Christ as your example for life.

Use His teachings as your handbook for life. Never make exceptions to them.
