Serving Like the Savior at Christmastime

Following Jesus Christ

At Christmastime our thoughts naturally turn to Jesus Christ. We celebrate His life and teachings through beloved Christmas music, events, and traditions. Watch as David Archuleta joins the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in singing praises to Jesus Christ through a familiar Christmas carol.

The Christmas season also motivates us to follow in the footsteps of the Master and serve others with Christlike love. Sometimes we might think serving others requires vast amounts of planning and effort to make a difference. But Christ often ministered quietly and spontaneously to individuals in need. Whether He was teaching Nicodemus about seeking the light (see John 3:16–21), offering water to a woman at a well to quench her spiritual thirst (see John 4:14), or providing comfort to a grieving friend at a time of loss (see John 11:32–38), the Savior filled His life with simple acts of service to lift and help others.

Watch as President Thomas S. Monson gently reminds us to follow the Savior’s example, not only at Christmastime, but throughout the year, as we perform simple acts of service for those around us.

Simple Acts of Service

This year, consider making simple acts of service your gift to the Savior as you celebrate His miraculous birth and life during this Christmas season. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Shovel snow for a neighbor.
  • Call a lonely friend for a chat.
  • Pay for the order behind you in line at the drive-through window.
  • Smile more.
  • Hold a door.
  • Give up the parking spot.
  • Assist the elderly.
  • Do the dishes.
  • Share your faith.
  • Practice patience in the carpool lane.
  • Send a text.
  • Take a friend to lunch.
  • Offer to babysit.
  • Listen.
  • Give a ride.
  • Reach out to a neglected family member.
  • Make a meal.
  • Volunteer your time.

The list of possibilities is endless. There are so many around you, especially at Christmastime, longing for the hope and help your simple acts of service will bring. As you act on quiet promptings to serve others, you will bless their lives and feel the true spirit of Christmas in your own heart through your Christlike acts of love.
