Speak, He Is Listening

By McKenzie Guymon

I have always loved office supplies. Shopping for school supplies was basically like Christmas shopping for me. I loved getting things organized and planning out my schedule for the upcoming school year. The idea of having a busy schedule was promising for me. I stayed busy growing up with school and extracurricular activities, but I liked it that way. As I have grown to adulthood and now have a family of my own, I have a new outlook on my busy schedule.

What was once welcoming is now a bit of a chore at times. I often feel overwhelmed and like I am failing at many of my tasks. I know that I am not alone in those feelings. They are feelings many people struggle with on a daily basis. Although I still don’t feel like I am always on top of things, I know that I am not alone.

One day in particular, I was feeling very overwhelmed. I had so much stress in my life that I was getting very little sleep and was not treating my family with the kindness that they deserved. I felt really strongly that I needed to pray and ask my Heavenly Father for help. I went into my room, knelt down, and burst into tears. I prayed to my Father in Heaven to tell Him how sorry I was for being short with my family and expressed my desire to be the wife and mother they needed. I asked for guidance to know how I could accomplish the things I needed to do while being the person I wanted to be. After my prayer, I sat in my room and felt something I hadn’t felt in a long time. I felt peace. I knew that my Heavenly Father cared about me and my worries, even if they seemed trivial compared to some of the problems in the world.

That feeling of peace gave me hope that I could accomplish the things that I needed to do while being the wife and mother I needed to be. I looked at my schedule once again and saw the tasks that had once overwhelmed me no longer seemed so difficult or even that important anymore. I felt strongly that I needed to really think about those things on my list and see what actually needed to get done. I prayed again for guidance and almost instantly knew what items I could do another day, what things I could ask someone else to do, and what things I could skip all together.

After this experience, I have continued to pray for balance in my life every day. My days aren’t perfect, but I can feel my Heavenly Father’s influence to know how to balance my day out a little better. I appreciate the guidance that I receive each day because of those prayers.

I know that our Heavenly Father cares about what troubles us. Many times we can fall into the trap of feeling like our problems aren’t important enough to pray about, but they are! God loves us. He literally is our Father in Heaven, and just like an earthly parent, He cares about what we care about. He worries about what we worry about. He wants to know what is on our mind, and He is willing to guide us.

We just need to be willing to turn to Him.

Pray often and communicate with Heavenly Father in order to create a relationship with Him. We truly are His children and He loves us very much. He is waiting for us to reach out to Him. I testify that God loves you and that if you take the time to make prayer a part of your daily life, your life will be blessed.
