Star of Bethlehem: Seeking the Light of the World Today

The Light of the World

Jesus Christ is our sure source of light in an ever-darkening world. With infinite love for us all, He firmly declared, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12). How fitting, then, that a loving Heavenly Father provided a beacon of light in a darkened sky—the star of Bethlehem—to herald His Son’s sacred birth.

Those who had eyes to see and hearts to understand watched for that star with eager anticipation and sought their Savior when the sign was given. Watch as wise men traveled far to follow the light.

We no longer watch for the sign of the Savior’s birth in mortality. But our need to seek the Light of the World has never been more urgent. As Jesus Christ taught when inviting others to follow Him, “Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light” (John 12:35–36).

We can become children of light by choosing to do the things that draw us closer to the true Light each day. If you would like to draw closer to the Savior in your personal life, consider these four suggestions for seeking the Light of the World.

Study the Scriptures

The Holy Bible, the Book of Mormon, and other sacred scriptures all testify of Jesus Christ and teach how to follow Him. The prophet Jacob declared, “[The scriptures] truly testify of Christ. Behold, I say unto you that none of the prophets have written, nor prophesied, save they have spoken concerning this Christ” (Jacob 7:11). And the Book of Mormon promises that the word of God “shall divide asunder all the cunning and the snares and the wiles of the devil, and lead the man of Christ in a strait and narrow course” (Helaman 3:29) to the Light.

Worship Weekly

While it is important to remember Jesus Christ at all times, we can come closer to the Light as we take time each week to keep the Sabbath day holy and participate in meaningful worship. Read about the benefits associated with weekly worship here. Watch as these individuals discuss what distracts them from seeking the Light and how they can find it as they take time out to keep the Sabbath day holy through worship.

Look to Living Prophets

Just as God provided prophets in ancient times to lead the people out of darkness toward the light, He has given us prophets and apostles today to declare the glad tidings of the gospel of Jesus Christ and teach us the best way to follow Him. If you would like to discover why prophets are important today, take this quiz and learn more.

Reach Out in Love

We can come closer to the Light when we lift another’s burden through Christlike service. The scriptures teach, “When ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God” (Mosiah 2:17), so it stands to reason that serving others brings us closer to Him. Watch as one doctor is making a difference in the lives of thousands through her service.
