Strengthening True Friendships by Looking to Christ

Everyone Needs Good Friends

No matter how old we are, we always need good friends. In a booklet written specifically for teenagers—yet applicable to all ages—called For the Strength of Youth, prophets and apostles counsel, “[Friends] will be a great strength and blessing to you. They will influence how you think and act, and even help determine the person you will become.” So finding good friends is important. Listen as Nik Day sings about the benefits of friends in “Good Friends.”

Friendship in the Scriptures

There are many examples of good friendships in the scriptures. In the Old Testament, Daniel drew strength from his friends Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego when standing for his beliefs in King Nebuchadnezzar’s court (see Daniel 1). In the Book of Mormon, Alma the Younger grew spiritually by the side of his friends, the sons of Mosiah (see Mosiah 27). And when Joseph Smith suffered persecution at the hands of his enemies, the Lord counseled him, “My son, peace be unto thy soul. … Thy friends do stand by thee” (D&C 121:7, 9).

Throughout His life, Jesus Christ showed what it means to be a good friend. He served selflessly, lifted others with love, and continually offered support to those in need. He taught, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). And then He laid down His life for us, His friends.

Being a Good Friend

If we want to cultivate lasting friendships in our lives, we must follow Christ’s example and be a good friend to those around us. True Christianity—really living what we say we believe—means reaching out to others with selflessness, patience, kindness, and forgiveness. It means looking for the good in others, building them up, and supporting them through good times and bad. It means trying to be like Jesus.

Watch as these two men discover that the best way to be a good friend is to practice true Christianity.
