A Life Map

Have you ever wished for a map to help you navigate life? What’s the purpose of life anyway? Why are we here? How much do our choices really matter? Questions like these can bubble to the surface when we face the challenging crossroads of life and have to make tough decisions. Because life provides a continuous stream of decisions to be made, most of us would welcome a map—if one existed.

But what if there is a map—a map that points out life’s dangers, pitfalls, and roadblocks—a map that shows us the trail we need to follow to reach the breathtaking grandeur of life’s purpose? What if hundreds of people who have already traveled through life marked a path for us to follow? This is exactly what has been left for us in the scriptures. Brave men and women of faith left a map for you and me to follow, providing all that we need to live full, meaningful lives.

To live a life filled with purpose, one only needs to focus on love. It’s in loving and being loved that we find life’s meaning and purpose. Life is a quest for love—the love of God, the love of one another, and even love for ourselves.

Love God First

There are many scriptures emphasizing why we should consider loving God—and not just love Him, but love Him first. By putting God first, our lives inevitably become more meaningful.

“But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him.” —1 Corinthians 2:9

“But behold, that which is of God inviteth and enticeth to do good continually; wherefore, every thing which inviteth and enticeth to do good, and to love God, and to serve him, is inspired of God.” —Moroni 7:13

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” —Romans 8:28

“Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” —Matthew 22:37–39

Love Others

Those who spend their time loving and serving others understand what it means to live with purpose. The following verses help us understand that when we love others, we’re aligning with what God would have us do with our lives.

“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” —John 13:34

“And behold, I tell you these things that ye may learn wisdom; that ye may learn that when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.” —Mosiah 2:17

“For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.” —Mark 8:35

“Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.” —1 John 4:7
