Give Your Family Your Best

We’ve all got them—those work responsibilities that demand our time, attention, and best efforts. It doesn’t matter if our work takes place in an office, a family room, a school room, or any number of different settings; by the end of the day, we could all use a little break, a little rejuvenation, and, yes, a little love.

After a long day we might be tempted to use our homes and families as emotional dumping grounds, giving those who are most important our leftovers rather than our best. But in reality, when we concentrate our best efforts on strengthening our family relationships when the workday is done, not only will we feel reenergized and ready to tackle another day, but we will also send a clear message to our families—you are special.

Check out how the Puentes spend time together making their family feel special.

Here’s How to Make Your Family Feel Special

If you would like to make your family feel special on a daily basis, try one of these activities after work:

  • Greet each other with a hug and a kiss. It doesn’t matter how taxing the day has been; a little physical affection will brighten any day.
  • Eat your evening meal together. That precious time around the dinner table will strengthen your family.
  • Lend a helping hand. If there is a room to pick up, jump in and help. If homework needs to be finished, offer an explanation or a word of encouragement. Volunteer to do the dishes. When the family works together, the household tasks are accomplished quickly and everyone can enjoy a little relaxation together.
  • Listen. You may have had a trying day, but others may have as well. As you listen to your family members, you will communicate without words how much you care.
  • Plan a special family night. Of course this may not happen every night, but set aside at least one night a week dedicated to just your family. Here are some ideas of activities you could include.
  • Establish a bedtime routine. Whether that routine includes reading scriptures, saying prayers, bathing children, or sharing bedtime stories, children will feel a sense of belonging and love with a pattern of behavior that is repeated daily.
  • Have a family dance party. Or really any kind of fun activity that draws family members out of electronics and encourages interaction. The more time you spend with your family in meaningful, bonding ways, the better.
  • Serve others. Look for needs in your neighborhood and community, and serve together as a family. The more you give of yourselves, the better you feel. Here are some ideas about how to get involved.
  • Plan a night out. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune to take your family out for a special event. With a little planning and preparation, you could enjoy a night at the ballpark, a show, or a picnic in the park. Whatever you choose to do, your family will see how special they are to you.
  • Say “I love you” often. Doing special things together always strengthens family bonds, but the simple words “I love you” enforce how special your family members are to you. So express your love sincerely and often.

No matter how things have gone on the job, take time each day after work to make your family feel special. As you do, you will remember that, in the end, family is what it’s all about.
