What It Really Means to Be Beautiful

What does it mean to be beautiful?

It’s hard to feel good about yourself when so many voices in the form of ads, magazine covers, TV commercials, and even other people tell you that beauty looks a certain way, and that way isn’t YOU. Phrases like “Beauty is skin deep,” “You have a beautiful soul,” and “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” can sound like cliche cover-ups for the fact that you simply don’t measure up to the standard of beauty set by the world.

However, it’s at this point that we need to step back and take a hard look at whose voices we’re choosing to listen to and believe. Do you believe more in God’s standard of beauty or in the world’s? It’s an important question to consider. Where does our beauty and worth come from?

The world’s standard of beauty changes, but God’s remains consistent. 1 Samuel 16:7 reads, “The Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.” Watch as Elaine S. Dalton, former Young Women general president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, explains what “deep beauty” really is and where it comes from.

In an article called “True Beauty,” Lynn G. Robbins explains: “The kind of a man a virtuous woman wants to marry also ‘seeth not’ as the natural man seeth. He will be drawn to the true beauty she radiates from a pure and cheerful heart. The same is true for a young woman looking for a virtuous young man.” He continues: “In pageants, there is only one declared the fairest of them all. But with the Lord there is no competition. All have an equal privilege to have His image engraven upon their countenance (see Alma 5:19). There is no truer beauty.”

In God’s eyes, there is no truer beauty than that which shines from a person who lives a Christlike life. The best part is that this beauty, unlike the world’s standard, is achievable by all. Love. Serve. Dedicate your life to serving God and uplifting those around you, and you will feel—and BE—beautiful.
