What Is the Purpose of My Life?

Life has purpose and meaning. God, our loving Father, wants us to find happiness and joy. He created a plan for us to grow, live by faith, and return to live with Him someday. God’s plan, often called the plan of salvation, gives meaning and context to our life here on earth by answering the big questions: “Where did I come from?” “Why am I here?” and “What happens after I die?”

Life is a proving ground for us

God sent us to earth to learn and grow through experiences, both pleasant and painful. He lets us choose between good and evil and lets us decide whether we will serve others or focus only about ourselves. The challenge is to have faith in His plan even though we don’t have all of the answers. Because we all make mistakes, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, so we can be cleansed and forgiven. When we accept Jesus and follow His example, we become less selfish and can enjoy greater love, peace, and joy.

Learn about God’s plan for us

Where did I come from?

Before you were born, you lived with God, your Heavenly Father. He knew you, loved you, and taught you about the choices that would lead to lasting happiness. This period is called the premortal life.

God presented His plan to us

God wanted us to come to the earth to gain a physical body. Here, we face challenges and situations that help us learn and grow so we can become more like Him.

Jesus was chosen as our Savior

God knew that we would make mistakes, so He chose Jesus to come to earth and suffer for our sins. Jesus’s sacrifice allows us to be forgiven and cleansed of our sins so we can live with God again someday.

What is my purpose in life?

Here on earth, we don’t remember living with God. We must have faith, rely on Jesus, and learn to choose between right and wrong. Life isn’t easy, but hard times let us appreciate happiness and peace.

Jesus’s sacrifice

Jesus suffered and died for our sins. But that doesn’t take our responsibility away—we must choose to accept Jesus by repenting when we make mistakes, being baptized, and keeping His commandments.

Where do we go after we die?

When we die, our spirit and body separate. Our spirit goes to the spirit world. It is a place of rest and happiness for those who have made good choices and a state of hell for those who have made bad ones.

The Spirit World

The spirit world is not a final destination or judgment. Because God is so loving and fair, those in the spirit world who never knew about Jesus are taught His gospel and given the opportunity to accept Him as their Savior.

We will all live again

Jesus overcame death so we can all live again. This is called the Resurrection. When we are resurrected, our spirits and bodies reunite. Our bodies will be perfect and will never die again.

Judgment

Jesus will judge us according to our actions and the desires of our hearts. He will be as merciful as He can. Because our actions and desires vary, heaven includes different kingdoms or degrees of glory.

The Celestial Kingdom

Our Heavenly Father and Jesus live in the celestial kingdom. If you follow Jesus’s teachings and accept His saving grace, you will live in God’s presence and have lasting joy. You will also be able to live with your family forever.

The Terrestrial Kingdom

People who refuse to accept the gospel of Jesus Christ but who live otherwise honorable lives will receive a place in the terrestrial kingdom.

The Telestial Kingdom

Those who continue in their sins and do not repent will receive a place in the telestial kingdom.

Jesus is the way to lasting happiness and salvation

The Bible teaches, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). God sent Jesus to save us from our sins. Jesus’s teachings guide our lives and lead us to lasting happiness. His sacrifice allows us to find meaning in life and grow to our full potential. You can start on that path today.

The Book of Mormon teaches about the meaning of life

Like the Bible, the Book of Mormon contains instructions from God to His children. God wants us to succeed in life and find happiness. The people in the Book of Mormon went through many challenges and had to overcome them by faith. We can learn more about the meaning of our lives from their experiences and teachings.

“I have been on a lifelong mission to find truth. … I met my later-to-be wife and was introduced to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I became more and more curious about this strong spirit I was feeling in their meetings. I began to read the Book of Mormon and was astonished at the truth it testified of! The Book of Mormon has led me to know the Bible better. … By reading the Book of Mormon, anyone can feel closer to our Savior and better understand the meaning of life.”

“I graduated from college and, at 21, had everything I had strived for: a good job, a nice car, and a busy social life, but I still wasn't happy. I felt compelled to reach out to the missionaries … I accepted their challenge to read the Book of Mormon. I read, studied, prayed, and knew it was true. … Becoming a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was the best decision I have ever made—the gospel doesn't purport to make your life perfect, but it gives you the ability to make the best of absolutely everything and know you're never alone.”

“Having been away at college for a year, I felt that there had to be more to life than day-to-day existence. I knew that I needed to find God. I wanted to know which was the true Church. Therefore, I researched many religions. … At that point, my best friend sent the missionaries to my door. This might have annoyed me earlier in my life, but I was at a point where I was actively seeking answers. I wanted to know for myself. The message from the missionaries about Heavenly Father's plan for happiness resonated with me, as if I had known those things before but needed to hear them. It all sounded so familiar. I knew I wanted the things of real substance, not fleeting worldly happiness. I wanted true happiness. To hear that God has a plan for happiness rang true to me. To know Heavenly Father is a loving Father and that I am His child, that He sent His Son Jesus Christ to atone and to be resurrected for us because He loved us, for me, is like precious gold. … Learning about a loving Heavenly Father's plan for happiness was like the sweetest fruit I had ever tasted. I have a purpose, life has direction, and relationships and families all have meaning.”

“Ever since I was young I always wondered what the purpose of this life was. Literally, I had questions like, "Why am I here?" "Where did I come from?" and "Where am I going?" When I met the missionaries, they answered those questions for me. More importantly than their answers was the peace I felt that came with them. It was as if all of a sudden my life had purpose, and I knew that as long as I stayed close to the Lord it would always have purpose. It's been a tremendous blessing to be a member of the Church, and to have the knowledge and testimony of Jesus Christ that I've been given. I know that my life is in His hands. The future isn't so scary with that kind of peaceful and confident perspective. I've learned that happiness is the design of our existence. Life isn't always easy, but I can certainly say that I'm a very happy person.”

“It is crazy to think that I have been a convert of this church. I lived most of my life not really knowing who God was or Jesus Christ. My family was not religious and extremely dysfunctional. I did not have an easy upbringing by any means. I never knew that there was something more to life or that there was a Father in Heaven that cared about me. I did not know that I had a purpose. However, in high school I realized that I wanted something more out of my life. I knew that there had to be more than what this life is, and I did not want to be headed down the path that I was headed for. I reached out to one of my friends who was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and I asked her to take me to church with her. I went to church, and I knew that this was it. I started to take the lessons from the missionaries, and my heart was changing. I felt so happy and good about everything, and it all made sense. Of course I didn't know everything, but I had faith. I knew that my Savior did suffer for my sins personally, just as he did for all of us. I knew that I could be forgiven of my sins, and that was a humbling thing for me. I prayed with all of my heart, and I came to know that this is what Heavenly Father wanted me to do. Converting to this gospel was the best decision of my life. I was lost for a long time, but I know my purpose now, and I know that there is something more than this life.”
